Radiant heat
Heat radiated from the sun, furnaces, hot plant or hot surfaces that warms workers even when the air is cooler.
Also known as: Heat radiation, Radiant heat from the sun
How to control radiant heat
- Shield hot plant, furnaces and surfaces with reflective or insulated barriers to block radiant heat.
- Provide shade structures over outdoor work and rest areas to cut direct radiant heat from the sun.
- Increase distance from radiant heat sources, and limit time spent near them with job rotation.
- Assess heat with a tool that accounts for radiant heat, such as a globe thermometer reading, not air temperature alone.
- Wear reflective or heat-resistant clothing and face shields when working close to furnaces or molten material.
Typical controls, most effective first. Your SWMS sets the controls for your own job and site.
